A new version of the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) Product Information Form (PIF V6.0) was officially launched at the AIFST 50th Anniversary Convention in July 2017. The PIF is a comprehensive form designed to assist with validation and verification of products and ingredients in relation to allergen statements, labelling compliance, nutrition claims and claims about dietary suitability or sustainability. The PIF also collects information relevant for quarantine risks, product durability, the presence of dangerous or hazardous substances, packaging materials etc.
While previous PIF iterations have been based on a spreadsheet format, version 6.0 features online portals for PIF creation, distribution, searching and archiving. PIF V6.0 also includes significant data improvements and additions to support country of origin labelling, health star ratings, VITAL® allergen outcomes and health and nutrition claims.
An import tool will be available to facilitate moving information from the previous version of PIF into the new online portal system. However, in the period since the PIF was last reviewed there have been a number of changes in Australian and New Zealand laws and regulations that impact on the content of the PIF. As a result, companies will need to review and add to imported data to bring previous versions up to the new V6.0 standard.
