Food Allergy Week is an annual initiative to help raise awareness of potentially life threatening food allergies in Australia. The Hon. Sussan Ley MP, Minster for Health, will launch Food Allergy Week 2016 in Sydney. The event will also feature leading allergists who will share the latest research on food allergy. Maria Said, President of Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia will present information about this year’s campaign which has the theme “Be Aware. Show You Care.”
In media articles associated with Food Allergy Week, it is reported that one out of every 10 children born in Australia today will develop an allergy to food. To highlight this, people are asked to paint one fingernail and raise awareness in the community of how widespread this public health issue has become.
Australia is said to have one of the highest rates of food allergy in the world and the incidence is increasing at an alarming rate. It is estimated there are 30,000 new cases of food allergy diagnosed each year.
