Food industry welcomes launch of VITAL® Online

VITAL® Online – the Allergen Bureau’s user-friendly, web-based VITAL Calculator is now live and ready to use. VITAL Online was officially launched on Wednesday 12 August 2015 at the 48th Annual AIFST Convention in Sydney.

Speaking at the launch, Allergen Bureau President Kirsten Grinter (Nestlé Australia) said that VITAL Online was a magnificent industry achievement and a credit to the ability of Australian and New Zealand food manufacturers to work together pre-competitively on the crucial topic of managing risks associated with cross-contact food allergens. Kirsten acknowledged the significant contribution of Allergen Bureau members as it was largely through their membership fees that the Allergen Bureau could develop the VITAL Program.

Kirsten was pleased to introduce Barry McGookin, General Manager Innovation, Capabilities and Skills at Food Innovation Australia Ltd (FIAL) whose timely funding support allowed the Allergen Bureau to bring VITAL online. Barry reiterated the importance of this industry collaboration and how the development of VITAL Online showcased the type of industry innovation that is central to FIAL’s mission to accelerate commercially-driven collaboration and innovation in the Australian food and agribusiness industry. Barry went on to speak about the new Industry Growth Centre funding model under which FIAL is now operating and encouraged AIFST delegates to find out how they may access support for sectoral collaborative ventures.

Debbie Hawkes, General Manager Quality and Operations ANZ at Hawkins Watts rounded off the launch with a first-hand history of VITAL. Debbie described how VITAL grew from a series of industry meetings, to a catchy acronym (thanks to Chris Preston) in VITAL, Debbie’s own initial version of the VITAL Excel spreadsheet, its evolution through a series of Excel calculator improvements, and onwards to the web-based VITAL calculator launched here now – VITAL Online!
