Expert Meeting on Food Allergen Risk Assessment – FAO/WHO

An international expert consultation on Qualitative Risk Assessment of Food Allergens took place this week (16–20 June 2025) at FAO Headquarters in Rome. Led by FAO and WHO, the meeting brought together global experts to develop science-based guidance to help governments and food businesses better identify and manage allergen risks — while supporting global harmonisation of allergen policies.

The Scope and objectives of the meeting

  • Create guidance to help implement food allergen risk assessment, control measures, mitigation, and other activities based on the risk assessment methodology previously employed in the five reports listed above.
  • To review publicly available literature and guidelines from competent authorities and industry associations (e.g. compliance guidelines, code of practices, etc.) to assess the current state of the knowledge in guiding qualitative and/or quantitative risk assessment of food allergens.
  • To develop qualitative risk assessment strategies and frameworks that include when and how qualitative risk assessment can be used, with the goal of facilitating and harmonizing the international trade of foods affected by with food allergen issues

On a personal note, AB President Jasmine Lacis-Lee said: “It was an honour to spend the week with such an inspiring group of experts, helping to develop recommendations that support businesses in producing safe food.”
