Lesser-Known Food Allergens Behind Many Serious Reactions

Recent attention has turned to unexpected offenders in food allergy cases—beyond the familiar “big eight” allergens. New evidence reveals that hidden ingredients such as celery, buckwheat, sulphites, and certain food dyes are responsible for severe and sometimes life-threatening reactions. Buckwheat, particularly in parts of Asia, accounts for a surprisingly high number of allergy incidents, while celery and sulphites are linked to increasingly frequent and intense responses.

These findings highlight the importance of looking beyond the most common allergens in both testing and labelling to ensure greater consumer safety.
