Current regulations under the US Federal Alcohol Administration Act (FAA Act) do not require the disclosure of major food allergens on alcoholic beverage labels. The U.S. Treasury Department’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau has proposed a new rule that will require labels on all wine, distilled spirits, and malt beverages to include mandated declaration of key allergens.
Although some companies are currently providing allergen information voluntarily, advocates argue that a mandatory policy is necessary. The move is seen as a significant step forward by advocacy groups, such as the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
Trade groups including the Wine Institute and the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States support the inclusion of digital labels via QR codes or other electronic means. Public comments on the proposals will be accepted until mid-April 2025, with the rules set to take effect five years after final approval.
